The Practice

The practice considers questions of ‘truth’ and representation and embodies the act of looking. The concept of the 'actual and the copy' or 'the object and its trace' is explored through the use of reflections. My work explores the significance that painting holds in such a heavily digitised landscape and why the imperfect image is the perfect image.

The current work is derived from my analogue photographs of monochromatic non-spaces, with the subject focus being on reflected objects within these spaces.

"The exclusion of direct human presence in my works is intentional. There are only ever hints towards human presence through certain objects or interference in the imperfections of handing analogue photography. The viewer is placed into my paintings as a result."

The practice is considering the presence of the viewer and barriers between the work and the audience whilst looking at the idea of the indexical sign and engaging with the concept of trompe-l’oeil.
